The Blackpool Illuminations are one of the most famous light displays in the world, stretching over 6 miles along the seafront promenade with more than a million bulbs. They typically run from late August through to early January.
How to See the Illuminations
- Drive the Golden Mile — The classic experience. Takes 30–45 minutes depending on traffic. Start from the north end and head south for the best views.
- Heritage tram ride — A wonderful way to see the lights from a vintage tram along the promenade.
- Walk the promenade — Get up close to the tableaux and installations. Dress warmly.
- Blackpool Tower Eye — For a bird’s-eye view of the lights stretching into the distance.

Best Times to Visit
- Weekday evenings — Far fewer crowds than weekends
- Early season (September) — Warmer weather and longer evenings
- October half-term — Peak time, exciting atmosphere but busy
- Switch-on night — The opening ceremony with live entertainment
Photography Tips
The best photos come from the promenade on foot rather than through a car window. Golden hour (just as the lights come on while there’s still some blue in the sky) gives the most dramatic shots. A phone on night mode will capture the lights well.
